Rough (unsurfaced) Lumber, kiln-dried (DHK) 6-9% MC
or air-dried to
9-15% MC
(moisture content),
run-of-the-log, from slow-growth
logs in NE Iowa and NW Illinois. One of the world’s best growing areas for Black Walnut Timber.

Grade/Discounts:
Quantity ordered must reflect the option selected.
i.e. don't try to get the minimum 100 BF price for an order quantity less
than 100BF.
BF
Quantities for "Pacs" are a reflection of the optimum (65 - 70
lbs) package
weight for Ground Shipping costs. This option is the most cost effective way
to buy small quantities. Therefore quantities should be in
multiples of the given Pac size. There may be a different Pac size
for 3/4 and 7/4 thicknesses. This is because these thicknesses have a
higher ratio of "miss cuts" ( a miscut is a tapering or some other
sawing imperfection yielding a thickness variance from one end of the board
to the other) from the next higher thickness. The net effect is
the boards weigh more for a given BF quantity but often surface to slightly
thicker than standard thicknesses. Surfacing negates this so see the
"Tip" in the Surfacing option.
The
About #1 Common grades contain a variable ratio of #1 Common & Better and #2&3
Common. For 100BF minimums the guaranteed ratio is 80%/20%, and
65%/35% for Pacs. This is because, for the smaller Pacs, one board has a
much greater effect on the ratio.
FAS
and F1F grades are available only as DHK (dehumidification kiln
dried). Note: For 4/4 FAS and F1F the price includes DHK so do not select it again in the
"Drying" option. Orders
over 300 pounds are shipped FedEx Freight which requires manual shipping
cost calculations. Orders over 150 lbs may ship cheaper via FedEx
Freight. We will advise you if this is the case.
Surfacing:
We now offer two types of planing.
Production
Planing emphasizes economy by maximizing production rates. We make
deeper cuts resulting in fewer passes and use high feed rates.
In
Finish Planing we pay attention to grain, make multiple passes, and use slow feed
rates. Our objective is not to maximize production rates, instead our objective is to maximize heartwood, and minimize defects,
sapwood, and tear out. An added benefit is that the time required for
finish sanding is reduced. The charge doesn't begin to cover the labor cost.
Tip: since surfacing controls thickness you can experiment with the
relationship between quantity and the optimum 65 - 70 lb ground shipping
rates (but you'll pay a substantial rate penalty if you go over 70 lbs).
Minimum
Width: One of the
most used and, I think, overrated options. It is unrealistic to
attempt to control both minimum width and minimum length as the longer
boards tend to be narrower
Minimum
Length: Use this
option only when absolutely necessary as this impacts shipping and packaging
flexibility. It easily "negates" the on-line shipping
calculations. IT WILL ONLY BE APPLIED TO THE #1 COMMON & BETTER
PORTION OF ORDERS. It is unrealistic to attempt to control both minimum
width and minimum length as the longer boards tend to be narrower. May
not be used in conjunction with Maximum Length.
Maximum
Length: Read
carefully please, this option is often misunderstood! Be sure to
include your maximum length specification in the "Comments".
Boards shipped will be equal to or less than the length you
specify. You are in effect instructing us to Crosscut at the length
you specify - the resulting board cut off will be included in your
shipment and will count towards the order total. Do not use this
option if you are simply trying to advise us as to your preference on where
to make crosscuts because of ground shipping girth limitations. May
not be used in conjunction with Minimum Length.
Sawn:
Most of our Lumber is plain sawn.
Rift/Quarter
Sawn option: Per NHLA Rules Quarter Sawn is defined as "When
80% of the surface....shows the radial grain at an angle of 45 degrees or
less with one face" For 5/4 and less stock, rift or quarter sawn boards
are happenstance, not by design, so we have very little of this stock.
Having "learned" from past experience we will not allow any
attempt to further refine, define, or otherwise control grain or growth ring
(radial grain) orientation beyond this general option We supply instrument
"builders" and "steam benders" who are artists in their
own right so we are aware of their unique needs - but those needs are beyond
the scope of this option and should be handled by quotation.
Center
Cuts: 6/4 and thicker lumber inventory includes boards cut from
the center of the log. Center Cuts contain Pith (boxed and
showing), and are more prone to checking and splitting, but they also tend to be rift or quarter sawn. In fact, I extract
cuttings from Center Cut lumber to meet the unique needs of the artists
mentioned in the Rift/Quarter Sawn option. The grade is determined
without regard to boxed Pith. Center Cuts may be included in the #2&3
Common mix unless you specify
differently.
Drying:
This web site is full of discourse about our Air-dried lumber so maybe the
only further explanation is the reason for the variance of 9% to 15% MC which is
quite simply due to the relative humidity fluctuations in our Northern
Climate and the effects of solar heating at the warehouse. Lumber
pulled from the top of the 12' high stacks is dryer than lumber closer to
the ground.
DHK:
short for Dehumidification Kiln. Our Dehumidification Kiln uses low
temperature drying - never over 120 degrees - this slow drying is to avoid the
internal stresses in the boards so common with the big, fast Kilns used in
the industry; therefore the drying process will be slow and we may have inventory
"availability" issues. But, to my knowledge, we will be the
only source for Kiln Dried, Unsteamed Walnut Lumber on the www and will have
superior milling qualities to boot. As time permits we will
construct a web page about our Kiln. Kiln Dried Lumber is stored in a
climate controlled area (8%-9% MC)
Order
Quantity has a direct effect upon length of boards shipped. Most
directly affected are lumber orders with weights less than 30 lbs. (less than
9 BF of Rough Lumber). The limitation is UPS OS1 (Oversize 1)
classification. Lumber
Boards Ship UPS using non standard (not boxed) packaging. Due to UPS shipping limitations we may need to crosscut boards.
We reserve the right to crosscut as we deem appropriate. You may use the product Comments section on your order for instructions if you have a particular need. For
more details or, To
override limitations and receive longer boards Please see
[UPS Limitations] .
